C. McCollister Evarts, MD, FAOA
C. McCollister Evarts, MD, FAOA, or “Mac” as he is known to many of you, is being honored as an AOA Pillar of the Orthopaedic Profession. The effort to recognize Dr. Evarts was championed by Kevin P. Black, MD, FAOA and all contributors were Dr. Evarts’ colleagues at Pennsylvania State University’s College of Medicine.
Bio
Among his many achievements, Dr. Evarts has co-authored over 200 articles, edited numerous publications and a five-volume textbook, held a wide range of visiting professorships and appointments, and participated on countless committees. He has educated over 100 residents, eight of whom became academic Department Chairmen.
Following his medical education, a tour in the United States Navy and a residency at the University of Rochester, he joined the faculty at the Cleveland Clinic in 1964 and subsequently serving as the Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. From 1987 to 2000, he served as the Senior Vice President of Health Affairs and Dean of the College of Medicine at The Pennsylvania State University.
Upon returning to Rochester New York, in 2003 Dr. Evarts was appointed Senior Vice President and Vice Provost for Health Affairs and Chief Executive Officer of the University of Rochester Medical Center and Strong Health. In 2006, he became a Distinguished University Professor and Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Rochester.
Dr. Evarts was President of the AOA in 1985. He also was President of the Hip Society, ABOS, and OMeGA Medical Grants. He chaired the Board of Directors of the Association of Academic Health Centers. Over the course of his career, he has been the recipient of many honors and awards—including the AOA’s Distinguished Contributions to Orthopaedics Award in 2006. For his numerous contributions to medicine, he was elected to the Institute of Medicine (formerly National Academy of Medicine) in 1997.
Dr. Evarts is a leading supporter of the AOA and was instrumental in creating the AOA Campaign for Tomorrow. When the campaign was launched, he made a gift of one million dollars to support the Resident Leadership Forum.
The AOA congratulates Dr. Evarts on being recognized as an AOA Pillar of the Orthopaedic Profession in 2019 and extends sincere gratitude for his ongoing support of the AOA programs and leadership initiatives.

“In my first year of medical school, I remember a conversation with Dr. Evarts that inspired me and made it so clear to me that he loved what he did. That has never changed. He has been an invaluable friend and mentor for many of us throughout our careers. With Dr. Evarts, it went beyond his remarkable skill as a physician and accomplishments in research and teaching. It was really his deep commitment to all those that worked with and learned from him, no matter where they were in their career. Whatever we do accomplish and contribute to our profession is in large part because of Dr. Evarts and his leadership. We are honored and grateful to say he is a member of our department. On behalf of Penn State Orthopaedics, I thank Dr. Evarts for all he has done for the AOA, our profession, and each of us, and am so happy to recognize him as an AOA Pillar of the Orthopaedic Profession.”
